Throwing housewarming for a friend?
So, my best friend & her family are moving into their first REAL house and I’ve offered to throw a housewarming party.
I have some questions about what is acceptable and could also use some advice on the party itself.
First off: Is it acceptable to have the party at a location other than the new house?? — I know bridal and baby showers are often held at outside locations but is this ok to do with a housewarming? I kind of don’t want to tell her “Hey I’m going to throw you a party and it’s going to be at YOUR house”.
And next, what are some fun easy things to do to keep the guests involved and entertaiend? — Are there any fun little games that anyone can suggest? Would it be acceptable to hand out token gifts to participants?
And lastly, what food/drink arrangements should I make? It’s going to be a somewhat intimate crowd, mostly family with a few close friends. No more than 20 people tops. I was thinking of maybe finger foods and punch. Is that acceptable?
My understanding of a housewarming party is that it is held in the new home to sort of “christen” it with the spirit of a party. Guests typically bring a gift to help decorate or “warm up” the home — things like house plants, bottles of wine or spirits, photo frames, candles, etc.
I think it would be odd to have it anywhere except in the home, and I don’t think your best friend would be offended with that.
I don’t think you necessarily need to plan any activities for the guests, since they all probably know each other, conversation surely will be flowing.
Your food plans seem totally appropriate, especially if you’re not throwing the party during dinnertime…
