Louis XIV and Louis XIIII?
Could you tell me the steps that Louis XIV took to consolidate his power as king of France after the death of Cardinal Mazarin?
How does Louis XIV’s approach to governing different with his father , LOUIS XIIII
Louis XIII was entirely dominated by first Richelieu and then Mazrin, and essentially left the running of the country to them.
In contrast, Louis XIV, once Mazarin was dead, decided to take control himself. He moved the French court to his new palace at Versailles, and took all the political decisions, and made all ministerial appointments and dismissals, himself.
This meant that the French nobility,if they wanted to have any influence over Louis XIV’s decisions, had to spend a lot of time at Versailles to be close to him. This meant they couldn’t spend so much time on their estates in the provinces, where they could plot against the king or their political enemies, and where it was much easier to defy or ignore the king’s wishes and orders.
Louis XIV appointed ministers on the basis of ability and results rathe than social rank. This meant many ministers were middle class rather than of the nobility. The nobility didn’t like this, so,again, were forced to spend more time at Versailles to have any chance of influencing policy.
As these middle class ministers owed their position and possible further advancement solely to Louis, they were loyal to him.Louis thus was able centralize government control in his hands, effectively bypassing the aristocracy and greatly reducing their power.
